Nathan McCullum unfazed by Daniel Vettori's return

If Nathan McCullum is feeling threatened by the sudden return of Daniel Vettori, he certainly isn't showing it.

The Black Caps spinner is a relaxed a member of New Zealand's one-day squad and so he should be.

The 34-year-old veteran has been a stable part of the Black Caps' environment for seven seasons now and over the last few years he has become New Zealand's number one spin option in the shorter versions of the game.

Since the beginning of the 2012 season McCullum has played 44 one-day international games for New Zealand.

Vettori, with all his injury problems, has played just eight.

But with eight more one-day internationals and a further two warm-up games before the World Cup, there is an acceptance that rotation will be part of the build-up process.

"At the end of the day we're part of the World Cup and there's 15 players and a lot of other guys that didn't make it and we're here and we've got this opportunity and just to be a part of it is something special," McCullum said.

"And I'm sure everyone will play a part at some stage throughout the World Cup whether that's one game or no games or a lot it's about doing whatever you can to make the team the best to be able to win this World Cup."

McCullum had first dibs in the three-wicket win over Sri Lanka in Christchurch and his return was more than satisfactory.

The all-rounder collected 1/38 off 10 tidy overs of off-spin and came to the rescue with 25 not out with the bat.

But Vettori probably holds the bowling card over his distinguished 281 one-day career. The left-arm pro averages 31.73 with an economy rate of 4.12.

In contrast McCullum averages 48.01 with an economy rate of 4.80 over 73 matches.

"We're different players. Myself Dan and everyone work about things in different ways."

"Not one spinner in international cricket's the same and you've got to understand how you go about your work and your role and my understanding of what my role is and what my game plan is and as long I stick to that and keep trying to improve that's what it's all about."

You could argue that McCullum's batting and fielding probably edges Vettori these days, but either way the Black Caps are in good stead.

"Across the board we've got so many different options and it's probably a combination of different people that's going to make up the decisions on different teams."

"So it's a pretty pleasing position I'd imagine for Brendon and Mike."
